Rochester Residential Internet Coverage

The coastal city of Rochester offers several options for internet access, depending on your speed and budget needs.

Through Frontier Communications, all of Rochester has access to a high-speed internet network. The network covers a large area, from the northernmost point of Charlotte to Genesee Valley Park in the south. Service is available as far west as Lyell-Otis and Maplewood, reaching through central neighborhoods like South Wedge, Upper Falls, and Brown Square. In the eastern half of Rochester, service is available in the edge neighborhoods of Browncroft and Cobbs Hill.

Those who prefer a cable internet connection can get service through Time Warner Cable. The coverage area extends beyond the city limits. Western neighborhoods in the Time Warner Cable service area include Dutchtown and Maplewood. This company offers coverage to the southern neighborhoods of Highland and Strong, as well as the eastern communities of Culver, Cobbs Hill, and Browncroft.

The Internet service has been great over nearly 3 years. During that time, maximum promised speed went from 100 mbs to 300. It actually started at 89 but now is OVER the promised 300. I don't need that speed since I have only 1 device at a time streaming, and I would like to pay less for lower speed. There has been only one outage in this time and it lasted only a few hours. I knew that the introductory rate would go up in one year, but it went up $5 more than promised. When I called, they told me that it was their current rate and they never promised a lower one. When a competing service was installing fiber in the area, I asked Spectrum if they would match the lower basic rate for that company (which was for 500 mbs, that company's lowest tier). Spectrum said they do not care about competition. A few months later, Spectrum raised the monthly rate again. But after the fiber was actually installed, Spectrum was willing to give me a lower rate. It was $5 higher per month than the fiber but I decided to stay because service was good. But just two months after that, my bill went up another $5 per month. When I said they had raised the price only a few months earlier, they replied: "That was LAST year. This is for this year." I will likely take the deal from the fiber carrier.

We lose service at least once per month, and when it's something that can't be cured with a simple restart, things get ridiculous. The people who field phone calls claim that they write up repair tickets, but nothing seems to happen to those tickets. As I write this from a coffee shop, we've been without service at home for a week, despite having made numerous calls and having been promised that someone will show up or call the next day. Dreadful company.

Has issues of spikes in the latency which are quiet frequent. Otherwise good speeds and decent service for the price.
