Pro: fast internet

Con: they lied

I had the service for 3 days. They came in, reused my existing cabling ( to include HDMI’s), then cut the coax that ran to rooms I didn’t order from them. Their channels suck and their remote and guide is arduous, so I cancelled it. For 3 days they charged me $91. I spoke to a ‘live chat’ who tried to convince me that $91 was fair for 3 days of service. I had to pay it. I bet they make a fortune off of people that way. And you can’t email them either. You can call, and waste your time, or live chat and waste your time. Nothing is documented either way. Thieves.

Pro: it's fast

Con: they lied

I was going to try 30 days (and I was actually going to switch), but 3 days later, the remote was arduous, the channel line up didn’t compare with Dish and I just didn’t like it. Also, the techs cut all my existing inhouse coax, except what they didn’t reuse. Well, they charged me $91 for those 3 days. I called, I spent hours on the ‘live chat” is still $91 for 3 days.

Pro: Good when it works

Con: Consistently and SHAMELESSLY throttle bandwidth

I’d like to believe Charter just gets slows very often, and that’s why at certain times my internet will either shut off completely or get so slow I can’t even load blank pages in WordPress.

For a long time I wasn’t sure if Charter throttles the speed of their customers. Sometimes when I’m watching Netflix for a few hours the connection will cut off, and I’ll have to wait a few hours before it turns back on.

The first few times I thought it was maybe just a coincidence that Charter ends up having problems with their service whenever I happen to be watching Netflix or working heavily on my website, but it has happened way too often and way too consistently under the same conditions for it to be a coincidence. I’m not sure what the data cap is, they were kind enough to not inform me about data caps when I signed up, but I’m convinced they’re throttling my speeds. I don’t mind so much with Netflix, but when I’m in the middle of working on a website and the connection just cuts off for several hours, that’s unacceptable. I’ll be looking somewhere else for service, or dropping these guys and staying off the internet for awhile. No more money for these shady companies.

Pro: speed it good

Con: Deceptive pricing, rate goes up after 12 months

Charter does deceptive advertising. Although their connection is good I am giving a negative review of the company because of their website and deceptive practices. All prices on their website are introductory prices. But does not say the word introductory. After 12 months the price goes up. To what? that is actually not anywhere on the website. THE PRICES FOR CHARTER ARE NOT TO BE FOUND ANYWHERE ON THE CHARTER WEBSITE. Even in the product disclaimers all the way at the bottom of the site it only says “after 12 months standard rates will apply” but it does not say what that rate will be. For me it meant at an increase of 50%. Better ask what the actually price will be because it is not published publicly. Your bill will show your new higher price after 12 months.

Pro: Pretty fast

Con: Dreadful troubleshooting support

Intermittent service interruptions over several years. Charter persists in following the same repair routine every time, even though they’ve had dozens of experiences with my service that have proven that their repair procedures don’t work. But they persist in doing what has proven time after time to not fix the problem. Probably total incompetence at the management level.

Con: after 39 years Charter allows cable in our area but not at 3 homes including mine.

My neighbor has Charter for over 4 years but not 3 homes within 500 ft of neighbors receiving Charter. Then one day they allowed one more home cable. Charges were too much for family nd we all use one address but separate homes so now bill must be paid before we are allowed cable etc services….speed nd distance was awesome when they had wifi. Never any probs.

I was considering changing from Time Warner to Charter. Since I have read these reviews I have decided against it. Thanks for all the reviews. It sounds like Charter needs to considerably improve their reliability and customer service before I switch to them. Too scary for me. I’ll look elsewhere.

Con: Don't subscribe!

They took over for optimum in Wyoming last year. Service stinks ever since. Now they have gone all digital. They want me to rent a cable box for every TV in my house at $6.99 a month per box. What a rip off. They could have given me some small DTA boxes to keep watching the basic channels on some of the TVs, but no suggestion of that. Cannot reach a real person. They stink. I am switching to another carrier now.

This company is only about selling you services or packages. They put very little effort into keeping their current customers happy or running. Took them 3 days to get my internet back after they had switched something out on my pole. As I work from home this lost me THREE days of work. They scheduled an appt. 3 days out and then called every 12 hours to re-confirm appt. threatening to cancel appt. if you did not answer the call and confirm. OMG

Fortunately I have a Verizon wireless modem, which I end up using for what seems like half the time – Charter’s connection is very unreliable and the speeds are generally slower than my Verizon connection. I called to upgrade from 15 to 30mbs internet speed two years ago. Two years later I find out that my modem was only made to pull 15. Not once during that phone call two years ago did they mention I needed an upgraded modem but it has been okay because they were getting double the money from me and I was getting half the service still.I have a new modem now and all they could do is give me a 20 dollars credit to my bill for three years of cheating me.

Pro: I am not a customer of Charter

Con: everything

Yesterday, several guys came by and wanted to know why I am not using Charter and who I am using. They told me this and that and so forth about why I should get charter and the billions in upgrades to the charter system. My UHF/VHF gives me free TV including locals channels and PBS which is just fine with me. My phone service is a land line and internet is tied to landline but it costs me $80 pm. So after reading these comments which cons far outweigh the pros, I will stick with what I got. Thanks for letting me know.

Pro: better than nothing I guess haha though I've had better phone internet in other cities

Con: always changing internet speeds

First internet package $34.99 a month for 2 year service agreement for anywhere from 15 to 30 mbps speed, then the service agreement runs out and have to pay over $50.00 a month, won’t give you another deal because you are a current customer so then all a sudden I notice It seem to be slowing down, don’t seem to load like it use to, no matter how many things I clear or get rid of, so I check with speed test its running at 11 mbps so I’m like wth so I call an ask how many mbps am I suppose to be running at they give a number like between 10 to 15, I was like what when I first got this it was between 15 an 30 so you all can just down grade people and make them pay more for getting less, was told o you can upgrade to get better, that’s not the point the point was I originally was suppose to get between 15 an 30, so then I move the guy who comes out is great and has to run a new wire, it didn’t take him long for what he had to do and it was up and running in no time, but he did mention I didn’t have a charter modem, and I told him it was because I had bought charters from them when I first had it hooked up but it started messing up so someone gave me one and it worked great so I’ve been using it ever since, he did say however that I probably would get better service with their modem,(good upsale try bud) and now since I have had it up an running it just barely wants to run, my computer has just been reformatted and everything wiped out so I know it does not have a bunch of junk on it and I do not down load a lot of things so none of that is the problem, so I’m sitting here an thinking what in the world is the problem so I do a speed test on it and it comes up running at 9 mbps, they are like the wind with their wind changing speed and prices they will blow you to lower their speed to make you upgrade for a little bit more power then blow you down in a few more months to make you upgrade more later, the fcc should make them put on everyone’s bill how many exactly mbps they are paying for, and they should definitely not be able to switch you to lower speed with out your knowledge and make you pay the same price. And if you ever ask about it they like to play dumb like what you mean do you really think we would do something as dishonest as that, duh
Now they may say it’s because I don’t have their modem but guess what I had this at the other house and it was working fine till right before my agreement ran out that I noticed the change in my mbps to 11, then I move and the guy mentions my modem and now I’m running at 9. To be honest when I had lived in another city I had dial up that runs better than what I have now and if that dial up ever comes over this way you can bet your bottom dollar that I will be getting it, you only stay on the top in business if your giving the best at a fair price other wise when other competition comes in and sweeps away your customers fast you lose them for good, when your giving a good product for a fair price, most often they know they have it good and will not stray, oh yeah there will be some customers to try the others when they come in but will always come back to a consistent plan with a fair price.

Charter has been providing our internet service for over a year now. I switched over from a larger company, after I got fed up with slow unreliable speeds and horrible customer service.

So far I cannot complain, the speed is decent with great reliability all day long. I’m very surprised how great the connection can be even when both my daughters hog up the bandwidth on their computers.

Horrible customer service!!! When u call to sign up every person you talk to will tell you different promotion-so you think you are getting a deal, but once you see a bill it will be different every time! I would rather have no internet than deal with such unprofessional company! what a waste of time!!! Not only there is no other options in the location I live right now, but the options I can get are ridiculous! when i first signed up, i was paying around $24/month. then after six months, it increased to around $51/month. after a year, they increased it to $54/month. i wouldn’t mind the price increase if they could have provided decent internet connection. lately, i have been having EXTREMELY slow connections. i couldn’t even watch youtube or netflix. i called customer service talked to a non-human tech support which was NO HELP AT ALL! so now i just subscribed to verizon internet and will be cancelling charter as soon as i get verizon. charter sucks BIG TIME. i could not imagine an internet company that could get any worst.

Charter runs specials for new customers, yet their old customers get a run around and their cable bills continue to go higher and higher. This summer mine went up $80.00 a month. I do not have movie channels or HD TV. Charter’s explanation – my promotion ran out in the middle of June and since they bill a month in advance, I should have contacted them, and they would have offered me another promotion. Seriously???? I am sick of this happening at least once or twice a year! They are the only cable company in my area, but I am now considering using Netflixs and buying an antenna to view my local channels. Charter has a monopoly and takes advantage of long term customers.

Pro: service is adequate for my needs

Con: they have a monopoly!

My main complaint is that they have a monopoly in Woodbury CT. There is nothing else available out here. I got an introductory rate with basic cable, internet and local phone service only, advertised price was $59.95 but I had to pay extra for high speed internet. They add on a lot of fees and maintenance charges and the bill is about $85 a month. I have to renew soon, but their offers are based on whether you are a new customer or an existing one, in which case they will jack up the price to about $125 for what I have now, plus all the fees and extras with a 2 year contract. The bill will almost double. It seems there is no recourse here for the consumer but to pay or go without.
