was promised a bump up to 25 last year to renew. short story. I did. they did not. they renewed me at my old speed. They conveniently lost all records of calls promising such. Now all phone calls are met with rudeness and defensiveness. How do they sleep at night? Lawsuit if I could.

I signed up for Century Link service on a promotional deal with Internet and phone bundle around $39.99 a month. I had service for 30-40 days when I receive my first bill. The first bill was $148.36 for one month of service. I called customer service to cancel service because it was so high and it was not under the $39.99 month plan like I originally signed up under. They told me that if I stayed with them they would put me back to the promotional deal I signed up for and credit me the difference. I told them I wanted to cancel anyways. They then told me I had to pay the full amount. I told them I could pay that amount in a 3 month installment and we set up a payment plan. They sent me the payment plan agreement. I paid the remainder $148.36 as agreed in 3 installments of $50.00. I thought this was all taken care of back in December 2014 until last week I checked my credit report stating that I owed $49.00 to century link. I just called them to explain the situation and told them I have all my 3 checks from my bank thinking that one may have been missed. They told me that I still owed another additional $49.00 in addition to the $150.00 I had already sent them. The operator I spoke with wasn’t explain anything except that I made the 3 payments and I still owed them $49 dollars. So I told him I wanted to make everything right and I paid the remaining balance owed so that I could get my credit cleared up. I am not happy with what happened. I know they want to make money but signing me up for a higher priced package was not right then not letting me know I owed them any further moneys to get this matter taken care of. The final bill I received was for $148.36 and the guy I just spoke to said it was for $196.35. I don’t know how a promotional deal can turn up to be so high and then no one wants to work with me or at least say sorry. I just paid them the remaining balance due in hopes to get the behind me again and repair my credit. I wish that someone in this company could realize that an honest mistake can happen and could take the time to listen to their customers. I don’t know how $39.99 can turn into 148.36 and then a year later finding out on my credit report. In the end I paid them a totaling $196.35 for one month of service which should have been $39.99. I just paid them the remaining balance today.

Up graded from 12mbps to 20mbps. Wifi is so slow. Called tech support. Was told you only receive 50 percent of the 20mbps when connected wifi. Run a speed test on the century link site and I’m usually only receiving under 4mbps. According to their speed test. So I’m not even getting 50 percent. Have done all the things they asked me to do. Replaced with a refurbished modem that they sent me. Still have the same issues. Everything in my house buffers. I’m fed up with this already. Been a customer for years and still can’t get anything done.

Pro: A bargaining chip to use against your other last-mile ISPs

Con: Value, reliability, support

My area is served by Comcast (cable), CenturyLink (DSL up to 40 MB/s), and a couple WiMax services. Everyone knows that Comcast internet sucks in virtually every metric imaginable in every market they serve. Well, CenturyLink manages to be worse! Ponder that thought, friend, before you decide to buy their service. One advantage of DSL is that it is supposed to offer a unique, dedicated-bandwidth connection from the central office back to the customer, as opposed to shared bandwidth on cable. However, my CenturyLink connection frequently didn’t crack half rated speed and suffered almost-daily outages of varying brief durations. Changing modems and changing DNS servers and calling tech support all had no effect. Now let’s talk about value. Perhaps you are tempted to ditch another ISP because of CenturyLink’s promos. (That is what I had done.) Be aware that once the promo runs out, in 2015 your ONLY option for extending the promo is to bundle services with CenturyLink, AND if you don’t, regular pricing gets you about 1/6 the bandwidth for about twice what you were paying in the promo. In other words, this is not an option if you are value-minded. Either bundle, or go elsewhere. So…I am back on Comcast, back on a Comcast internet-only promo. Embrace the suck, but whatever you do, avoid Centurylink if you can help it.

We had cox services for 12 yrs…started having small issues and my husband saw all the advertising on how inexpensive century link was so he called century link on pricing. He called in December they would set up an appointment and never showed up this happened 3 times where we would wait and nothing. Finally after almost a month we finally got services, they told my husband we would be only be paying about $150 a month…first bill almost $300 ok we just received another bill and it’s for another $300….REALLY!!!! And now supposedly we are in a contract for a year I totally regret switching to century link they are a rip off….my husband is on a fixed income and they totally took advantage of us….

Con: Non-existant customer service

If I could give this company negative ratings I would. They are comprehensively appalling. Their connection speeds are hugely variable, their customer service is beyond appalling and never, ever actually addresses issues. Just tries to get you to buy other/new products.
They even have their email addresses blocked by SPAMCOP for their poor reputation, spamming/poor reputation and open relays.
Their “customer service” is outsourced to the Philippines and they are rote answer robots with absolutely no knowledge or authority.
The company has no email contacts for ANYONE. So if you have an issue, you can’t even send them an email copy of what the issue is. Astoundingly ridiculous.

Con: Speeds are terrible, long hold times, issues after issues

We live in the country and our service is terrible. We literally have dial up speeds and are told we can’t get better speed because we live over 1850ft off the road, but we don’t even live 700 ft from the road. Every time I have had to call in for help, I end up being on hold forever. The shortest call I’ve placed was 45 mins. That’s ridiculous. I’ve had billing issues, service issues, several missed appointments by the tech, wires that took 3+ weeks to be buried. If there was any other service provider option in the area I would take it, even if their prices were higher. I think Centurylink settles to offer crappy service just because they know that there isn’t any competition here.

Pro: Enjoyable wait time on the phone to really get to know yourself while waiting for customer service

Con: LITERALLY EVERYTHING.

I am not a fan of any internet service provider since they charge the public excessive amounts for something that costs them nothing to produce; however, CenturyLink is the devil.

For a full year we suffered through terrible internet connection (1.5 mbs) with the promise that upgrades were on the way and having to grit our teeth during their nauseating commercials claiming 40 mbs. Even with the measly internet, we rarely got 1 mbs so had to call a total of 6 different times for assistance. Each time the very friendly Indian representative attempted to “permanently” solve the problem, only for my family to be back in the same situation two weeks later.

After getting fed up enough, we decided to cancel our internet and phone services and called to do just that. We were told BOTH services were disconnected and we would no longer be billed. Lo and behold a few weeks later we receive ANOTHER bill. After a very long and frustrating call to customer service, it was explained to us that we only canceled our phone service the first time and the sneaky little hobgoblins had been continuing to charge us for internet.

CenturyLink took advantage of us as loyal customers for a full year and then managed to impart a final blow before we could actually be rid of them.

If you have ANY other option that isn’t a sucky deal, I recommend you take it. CenturyLink is the absolute worst.

Pro: It is my only option for internet. I can log on to it.

Con: The most unethical company I have ever dealt with

1. I called about internet and phone service. I was quoted 61.90. Unlimited data. Unlimited long distance. Installation fee waived. Modem would be mailed and rented monthly until I purchase my own. No contract fees. Supervisor confirmed order. Names were Douglas and Steven

2. Installation and Arrival:
– I arrived to my new home. It was not setup. I was also never mailed the modem. They scheduled a technician to come out. It was an $85 charge. Installation is not free.
— minimum 5 lies – I spoke with customer service because I didn’t hear from technician on day scheduled. One rep told me that he was on the way. He never showed up. One told me he would be there between these hours. He never showed. Over and over.
— He finally arrived almost a week later. He was very nice.
— While waiting on the technician, I received an email about my bill. I sent email and spoke to customer service on several occasions. I do not think that I should pay for the time that I was not able to get service.

3. An actual bill never came. I can’t tell you the number of hours that I spoke with customer service, trying to get a bill. The customer rep told me the amount I owed. My service was connected in late December. It was mid-January. I owed over 400. I told them that is not anywhere near what I was quoted. I am not paying until I see a bill and I dispute the amount. I should not have been charged for the week that I was not connected. I should not have been charged an installation fee. Even with those two added in, the amount is not anywhere near 400. They said the monthly price is 91. If I sign up for auto-pay, they will give me a 10 discount. There is another 10 discount they could give. The price would be 71. This is not at all what I was told my fees would be.

4. I finally spoke with a manager, Jeff. I have 10-15 hours logged in phone calls, online chats and emails. He said over and over how he told me the monthly fee, the other customer rep did as well and his person that day. It was 3 people telling me the monthly fee so I know. He seemed to skate over that my issue was that I was quoted an entirely different thing. He said that he has never heard of the Douglas and Steven. He said that no one would have given me that amount. I misunderstood the original person, and the confirmation apparently. He said that he would do me a favor and give me a 20 discount to remove the auto pay fee. I would still be charged when I didn’t have service, for the installation, and more monthly than was told. He really let me know that it was a favor, and not holding his company to the quoted price. It was not a favor, I was still charged for many things incorrectly. I still have not seen a bill.

Basically, this company runs scams. They quote you and once you have service, they change the price. I did not misunderstand. It was a lie.

Also, the day that the technician came, a charge appeared on my phone bill to Canada. I never made the call. I called the person and she confirmed that she looked through her phone records and does not have any call from the States in that timeframe. Another scam.

I have one other choice for internet in this town. If someone else is in the same boat, and you use Century Link, I recommend the following:
– get every single conversation in writing. Do not call customer service on the phone.
– have options to switch ready to go because I doubt writing will help them honor their word. They are just an unethical company. They even added notes to my account that were false.

I signed up for a bundle, detailed billing to be $135 / mo 5 months ago. Have been charged over twice the amount I agreed to for both internet and TV. Supposed to pay $35 / mo for internet, have been paying $76 / mo. Supposed to pay $34.99 for Direct TV, through Century Link, have been paying $79 / mo.

I have been trying to contact ANY customer service personnel for 2 months now, to try to correct this. I have been unable to reach them in any capacity. I have even tried the contact info for the Board of Investor Relations and Board of Directors without success. The links to “chat” don’t show up on the website, the numbers I have found have had me on hold for 3+ hours(and called 3 times a week for 2 months now), at which point I had to leave and hang up.

They lied to me to get me to sign up, and now I will have to pay >$500 to get out of my Direct TV, because Century Link lied about the price I would pay.

I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, 2 complaints with the FCC and am going to file a complaint with Ft Riley, KS to pursue having them put on the “off limits” list of local businesses. I have emailed my situation to local news agencies, as well as contacting the local and State legislatures and the Chamber of Commerce, and would recommend any others in my situation do all the above as well, if this is to end.

And still now word from Century Link…..if that tells you anything…

Pro: Time from ordering to activation

Con: Misrepresentation of "risk-free" high-speed internet trial

I LOST HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TRYING CENTURYLINK RISK-FREE NO OBLIGATION HIGH SPEED INTERNET TRIAL!!

I’m a long-time CenturyLink customer with multiple residential AND business accounts/lines. I also use CenturyLink for internet access and to get my DirectTV. So I pay CenturyLink quite a bit each month.

Recently, CenturyLink sold me the new 1-Gig high-speed internet service. It isn’t cheap, but 1-Gig/second might be worth the price. Yet such speeds can be hard to achieve, and CenturyLink is clear about this in its related technical materials and High Speed Internet Subscriber Agreement. So I was hesitant to buy. But the sales agent said, “I can actually have you put down to try that service for 30 days after it is installed risk-free at no obligation to you to keep it” This is quoted directly from my full transcript of the order, which was done via CenturyLinks chat service. Based on this assurance, I agreed to the risk-free trial.

The actual upload speed for me was only about 20 Meg/second and I couldn’t fix the problem after discussing the issue with the installation technician, nor after slogging through CenturyLink’s various trouble-shooting suggestions.

When I noticed that I was billed around $225 for the risk-free / no obligation trial, I emailed CenturyLink on the 29th day after installation and directed them to cancel the 1-Gig service/trial. To this day I’ve received no reply. So on the 30th day after installation, I spent 4 hours in chat/IM and on the phone with CenturyLink whereby they were finally able to cancel the 1-Gig plan/trial and place an order to restore my prior speed.

Here’s the most frustrating and horrible part of this consumer experience: Ultimately, CenturyLink is refusing to remove the $225 of fees for the risk-free / no obligation trial, and has threatened to send my account to collections if I don’t pay!

CenturyLink’s agents and supervisors gave me various explanations, which all seem to be based on irrelevant/invalid semantics. Here are the explanations I can remember:

– CenturyLink said that the 30-day risk-free trial is only good if the customer cancels ALL of his CenturyLink services. But this was absolutely not clearly represented to me when agreeing to the order, nor does it fit with the context of the order for a trial to try an optional service upgrade. [I mean, why would anyone do a trial of a new optional service upgrade if unsatisfactory results meant that ALL services would need to be cancelled? Also noteworthy is that the associated High Speed Internet Subscriber Agreement defines service to mean the specific service being described.]
– CenturyLink was ready and willing to cancel ALL of my service, but nonetheless still intended to collect the $225 for the risk-free trial.
– The CenturyLink agent did not allow my 29th day email to be considered because she said it was lodged on the 30th day. [But this is irrelevant because it’s still within the 30-day trial]. She also rejected the email notification because she said that service changes can’t be made via email.
– CenturyLink is disqualifying me from the risk-free trial benefits because CenturyLink asserts that my chat and telephone requests for cancellation request were lodged on the 31st day after service installation, even though they were actually lodged on the 30th day [still within the 30-day trial].
– CenturyLink said that they could do a lot more for me if I had called them before the 30th day and that I should have cancelled the service sooner.
– The CenturyLink agent and her supervisors said risk-free just means that I’m under no contractual obligation to keep the service.
– When I asked for CenturyLink’s formal written definition of risk-free, no one was able to provide such a definition. Instead, the agent said that CenturyLink decides the meaning of risk-free via her as the service agent, and via her supervisors.

I’m just a regular guy and certainly no match for the power, strength, and legal counsel of a juggernaut like CenturyLink. But as far as I can see, CenturyLink doesn’t seem to be abiding by its apparent misrepresentations sold to me during the ordering process, nor in the related High Speed Internet Subscriber Agreement.

On top of this, a similar misrepresentation happened previously when CenturyLink promised us that DirectTV’s $200 Visa gift card offer was good when adding DirectTV through CenturyLink. But later CenturyLink reneged on that too. My wife was depending on that for groceries.

So in total I’ve lost $425 through my recent experiences with CenturyLink.

It also seems that the FTC has similar concerns about such things. For example the FTC said, some businesses make it tough to cancel, hiding the terms and conditions of their [risk-free] offers in teensy type and putting conditions on returns and cancellations that are so strict it could be next to impossible to stop the deliveries and the billing… Here’s the FTC’s source article: http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0101-free-trial-offers

I guess I’ll need to start the complaint process recommended by the FTC, followed by the arduous process (ugh) of finding another service provider for my residential and business accounts.

I also feel the need to share my experience via social and other media outlets in order to help other consumers avoid this kind of experience. CENTURYLINK BUYERS BEWARE!!

Have had service 3 months. Was signed up for phone in addition to internet which I did NOT want. Duplicate charges on bills, but have been able to get them removed (just a pain!!) Speeds are considerably slower than they should be, and price is outrageous but being in a new area it is on par with the local competition.

Customer service is my main complaint. Called about no internet in October and woman was very short and almost rude. obviously not having a good day. Received an email that my email address had changed, and when i called back found she had modified it though it was not something we discussed or that she verified. They would not give me her name or let me speak to a manager to lodge a complaint. It has happened THREE TIMES now that a cs rep has butchered my personal info when making a call for tech support.

Last time was Thursday, called and scheduled a tech to come out for recurring internet problems. Sat here Friday from 8am to 4:30pm,with no call with an eta. Called and found my phone number was changed, to an out of state area code? Had it corrected and have tried multiple times to speak to a manager or file a complaint. Received an email for a customer service survey, but the link was expired the same day I received the email. Have sent several emails back and forth through the website, with canned responses that do not have anything to do with my complaint.

Finally received a call from Heather today and was told there is no way to see who I spoke to on a particular day and time, the system does not log who modifies a customers information, and was told that often cs reps do not even log against a customers account when you call in. She verified my account information and AGAIN found my email address had extra characters in it. (FOURTH TIME) So obviously when they modify the email address I stop getting notifications that something has changed in my account.

Giving one star because I have to give at least one star. This is by far the most unprofessional company I have ever done business with. Zero accountability and no way to reach anyone but customer service. The only reason I have not switched providers yet is that I do not want to be tied to a contract. But as today I am looking…

Pro: 40 Mbps service with dedicated line... Quick and reliable

Con: Service went down twice for a couple hours each.

I have 40 Mbps home service.. I have had it for a year now and am very happy. The price was 39.99 for the first year, but went up to 80 something after… wireless modem included. When the price went up after the first year, I was going to switch to Comcast to get their intro price. I called century link and they said I could keep the intro price for another year, then I could call after this next year to see if I could do it again. However, customer service was, well, slow and I pretty much told them I was going to cancel service; in order to get the deal. But I got it.
The only issue I’ve had is that it has went down two times this last year for a couple hours each time.
Speeds are great. I get WiFi speeds anywhere from 30-41 Mbps on speedtest.net. Netflix plays on my 3 TVs at the same time without pausing… HBO go, on the other hand, tends to buffer. However, I think this is an HBO server issue.
Overall, I have had a good experience. I used to have comcast, but ditched them for this price a year ago…. If I switched back to Comcast I could get 75Mbps service for 59.99, which would include the $10 modem rental, but 40 Mbps is plenty fast and $20 cheaper.
I have also noticed that I have had to reboot the century link modem less than I did with Comcast, but that could just be good luck… I have only rebooted it twice this last year… And that was during the times the service went down.

I would say Centurylink, if I had other options wouldn’t me my first pick. I do like the price for what I get currently the 10mbps. I have had many issues with them and have had to hold over an hour each time I called to get someone to just transfer me to someone else. Finally once able to get a service call set up they did offer credits for the stress, etc…Techs that come out are very nice and helpful. Finally almost two months later all issues fixed when they could have told me from the start that I could have experienced issues due to the upgrades that just happened in my area. Now I have the 25/2 mbps package being installed on Thursday where they have to place a hub in. We will see how that goes. I say if it works it works, if not may take some time to get it fixed, they just guess. However, overall the price, and speeds that I get a wonderful for DSL. When I called Centurylink they told me the installation is never free and my price was my price. The customer service was absolutely the worst I’ve ever seen. I contacted them via the email link in “contact us” to notify them that they had messed up my address. After several emails they sent me an email to go to their website and chat with them. After chatting for 20 minutes, it turned out that the lady was only in sales and couldn’t make any changes to the account. She told me to call “customer care.” I told her I didn’t want to spend 20 minutes on hold. She said there was nothing she could do. I suggested she transfer me to that department. Well, it turned out that she could do that, but apparently only if I asked.
The next lady verified that they had both my addresses on file, the old rental and my house, where I have received service at for 3.5 years. She assured me that my service address was showing in her system as my current address, even though that isn’t what is shown in my account. I told her I wish I believed her, but could she just delete the old address to be sure. Nope. Only the Loyalty Department can do that, and they only take calls, so she can’t transfer me.
So, after 50 minutes chatting, no help, no resolution. Never mind that they never did do anything about my original problem, which was that I was being charged taxes from a town where I do not live.
They call their service department “customer care,” not “customer service.” That is because they don’t offer any service and only the customers care.

Quick and short: slow, unreliable, horrible customer support, overpriced, connectivity issues, only get a fraction of the speed you pay for, high latency. I was able to read over 20 of these reviews and write this review before my other web page loaded.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES GO WITH CENTURY LINK. Save your money and buy a plan for your phone with more data, because its 17.5x faster (3.5mb vs 0.2) and doesn’t have a ping of 650ms.

I truly thought there was no worse provider out there than Comcast, until I signed up for centurylink. Their internet is slow, their Prism TV services are unreliable (the set top boxes freeze several times a day and need to be reset. Ever since I used their email services my inbox is plastered with spam even so I set the highest spam filter on their webmail app as well as my Outlook. Their internet speed is as bad as dial-up a lot of times. This becomes especially apparent when trying to stream another service. Since they and Comcast basically have the monopoly for satelite-free TV/Internet in my area, I am playing around with some “cafeteria” type TV streaming services. Once I found the best alternative, I will cancel my centurylink subscription, and go with an internet provider that has prime speed, and a stream TV service.

Con: Everything associated with this company and their product

Background: I’m in the Army, and recently was reassigned to an area outside of the Century Link service area which I was told when I signed up that if that happened, there would be no problem in canceling and no cancellation fee. I had this service for about 7 months and the quality was completely unsatisfactory. We had multiple weeks that the internet, cable, or both would be out and it would take days if not weeks to get a technician out to service it.

Situation: I moved three months ago from NC to GA. I closed my account the second week of June at a physical location in Fayetteville, NC. Again, I was ensured there would be no fees associated with canceling. It is now the middle of September. I have received emails every month since I moved that I still had an outstanding balance that continues to grow for services I am not receiving. I have called multiple times and had the balances removed and been told that there were no issues and that I was done with any obligation to pay Century Link. Yet here I am in September, three months after moving, sitting on hold for over an hour trying to reach someone who will solve the problem. I’ve been reconnected four times, and after the second time I was reconnected, the customer service person hung up on me.

Advice: Do not sign up for this service provider. The quality of products they provide is bluntly put, garbage. The customer service personnel are friendly, but overall extremely unhelpful. They don’t seem to know what they are doing, on a technical level and at the customer service level as well. The price is pretty much the area’s average, although with their deals it might be a little better than their competitors. The money you might save is not worth the headaches you’ll have trying to get your service working at least two to four times a month. Nearly forgot, whichever person I signed up with on the phone didn’t enter my information correctly so I could never verify anything with my phone number or address matching to the account number. So if I didn’t have the account number easily available, I couldn’t get anything done with customer service. This also made it impossible for me to log in online. Don’t waste your time on this company, it’s not worth it.

Pro: No service calls but constantly had to reset router

Con: Dishonest, Expensive, Rude, Slower speeds than advertised

Jacksonville, NC

SCAM: On the very first call, representative tried to scam me. I was getting Directv, which partners with CenturyLink in my area without much else for options. Lady tried to tell me 6 Mbps (most expensive) internet was only speed available in my area. When I backed away and no longer wanted internet, she told me I was stupid to not take the deal and became very rude. When I mentioned calling Directv back she became very agitated and clearly did not want me to talk to them. I got rid of her and the next rep told me they offered all the way down to 1.5 Mbps at a much cheaper price. When I asked about the previous rep I spoke to, there was no record in their system that I had called before, nor did they have any interest in trying to stop someone in their company who was obviously trying to scam me (for commission I guess).

BUNDLING: It’s an outright lie. Directv told me CenturyLink’s system wouldn’t let me bundle so I needed to call CL. CL told me they could only give me a $5 discount (instead on Directv’s $10) then said their system wouldn’t allow the bundle so I’d have to call in after my first bill to bundle. When I called back to bundle, they said I had to bundle before my service was connected. The only reason I got CL was to get the discount through Directv. Instead I ended up with a two year contract with CL, no discount, and horrible service.

SPEED/PRICE: Kept mailing me about how I should increase my internet speed. By the second or third notice, my internet started getting really slow so I checked it. I was averaging 0.6 Mbps and paying $70 a month for it!

CUSTOMER SERVICE: Reps must not work for CenturyLink. I often knew more than they did. Every time I asked a question, they gave me a would, should or usually answer, like they can’t check. They may not be able to check because there is a ridiculous lack of record keeping at CenturyLink.
Q: Did my bill post?
A: It usually posts by the 15th.
Q: Does your system confirm my equipment was returned?
A: If you got a receipt, then you would have credit for the return.
Q: Is my bill only for up to the 25th?
A: If you stopped your service on the 25th, then you should only pay until the 25th. (I agree!)

CANCELLING: When I cancelled my service, the lady had never done a cancellation before. The only thing she did right was disconnect my service. She didn’t know what to have me do with the modem I was leasing from them, and my service – though disconnected – was not cancelled; CL was still billing me. When I called to straighten it out, the rep said there was no record I had ever asked to have my service cancelled, even though it was already disconnected and I had already turned my modem into the local CL store.

You want to find what speed is available in your area and it says to click on a link and all the link does is tell you to call their customer service. When you call customer service you can easily wait for 30+ min. When you finally get someone to answer they tell you that your area is not in their responsibility and that they will switch you to someone who handles that area. Then they put you into another que at the bottom only to hold for another 30+ min and in the process somehow the call is dropped! Horrible company to deal with!!!

You are chatting with Scott R..
info: How may I help you today?
Scott R.: Thank you for contacting CenturyLink for your internet and television needs. This is Scott, how may I help you today?
UnHappy Customer: I have an issue with my service.
UnHappy Customer: I have been paying extra for the bonded internet for approx. a year since we moved in the new house.
UnHappy Customer: We have called a few time because the internet has been VERY slow.
UnHappy Customer: the last time a tech came out (last week), he said he was surprised we had service at all because it was connected wrong and missing a wire of some sort.
UnHappy Customer: So now we have a wire running across the front yard and waiting for somebody else to come and dig a trench to bury the wire. But the internet is running great.
UnHappy Customer: So my question is, since I have been paying, and paying extra, for our internet this whole time and it has been barely working, what kind of compensation can I get back from centurylink?
Scott R.: I am sorry to hear that UnHappy. I would be happy to see what kind of a credit we can get for you. May I have your account number or CenturyLink phone number so I may better assist you?
UnHappy Customer: I can’t log in to the account right now because something is wrong with the service, but the phone number should be under XXX-XXX-XXXX
Scott R.: Im not finding the account with that. May I have the full service address including city, state, and zip please?
UnHappy Customer: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Scott R.: Thank you. In order to protect the privacy of our customers, I must verify you are an authorized user on this account. Can you please verify the last 4 digits of your social security number?
UnHappy Customer: XXXX
Scott R.: Thank you for being a valued customer, UnHappy. I am checking on what kind of credit I can offer you now. One moment please.
Scott R.: My supervisor authorized me to issue a credit for one month of service. The promotion expired on your most recent bill and your internet was $73.95. I can issue a credit for that entire month.
Scott R.: After tax is credited the credit amount will be $80.24.
Scott R.: I have not heard from you for a couple of minutes. Do you still need me to keep this chat conversation open for you?
UnHappy Customer: hold on please
Scott R.: Ok
UnHappy Customer: not good enogh, ask again please
Scott R.: Im sorry, but that is the most I can issue and it has been issued. If you log in to your online account will be able to see that. I checked and do not see any repair tickets since the most recent one and no notes on the account regarding any issues.
Scott R.: Sorry no tickets prior not since
UnHappy Customer: How long have we had this account? How many times has there been a call?
Scott R.: Service was set up May of last year. I only see 2 repair tickets for the entire time the account has been open and the only other notes I see are prior to the upgrade.

UnHappy Customer: But we have been paying for the bonded service, correct?
Scott R.: Yes you have, but if your service wasnt working as it should be it needed to be reported.
UnHappy Customer: On the last ticket, did the tech say anything about running the new wire?
Scott R.: I cant see the notes on the ticket itself. I can only see that the ticket was opened. Only our repair team can see the notes on the ticket itself, but a new wire wouldnt effect how much credit we can offer. Had it been reported we would have been able to issue credit and got it fixed sooner.
UnHappy Customer: Since I have never had CenturyLink, nor a service tech, how would I know if the service “wasnt working as it should be “.
UnHappy Customer: I just assumed that was the best it would get
Scott R.: A speed test can be ran to determine if you are getting the speed you were quoted. There is a speed test on our website as well as several free speed tests available online.
UnHappy Customer: The fact is, it wasn’t connected correctly the first, or second, time. We have been paying for bonded high speed internet that was anything but for a year. We finally had a repair man that was knowledgeable and finally the service is working the way it should have for the last year. And all you can offer is one month. RIDICULUS! It should be at least six months, since it was less than half of what we were paying for.
Scott R.: Im sorry UnHappy, but further credit cannot be issued. I did ask my supervisor and we cannot issue additional credit. If it had been reported we could have fixed the issue sooner. The approved credit has been issued. Im sorry if you feel that it is inadequate. Is there anything else I can do for you today?
UnHappy Customer: Nope. Thanks for all of the ‘service’. I’ll be sure to let everybody and their brother know about the ‘superior’ service that is offered by centurylink and hope that another service is offered in our area ASAP
info: Your chat transcript will be sent to unhappy@they-stink.com at the end of your chat.

I have had centurylink as ISP since Feb. 20, 2015 and every bill has been astronomically higher than the package price promised to me. In May 2015 I called and canceled the phone to lower the bill even further and they have been charging me for the phone bill since. For the 5 mos. I have had their service in lace I have had nothing but trouble with my bill. I have had to call them each month, dreading it because they always have some excuse; “You have all your discounts in place, the package costs $ and you have a discount of $ and if you are signed up for autopay then you get a discount of $ giving you a cost of $. ” But it is still at least $20 to $40 over the originally given promised amount when I signed up in Feb.
I have paid this company $398.00 in 5 mos time for a service i am now suppose to paying $34.95 a month for internet only. The first 3 months should have been only $64.95 a month. That comes to a total of only $264.75 if my math is correct. These people are thieves and they are getting away with it. Unfortunately they are the ONLY ISP in the area too!

Our upgrade resulted in a downgrade. CS failed to tell us that upgrading from 7 MBPS to 20 MBPS would result in downgrade of existing upload speed to less that 1 MBPS. Result: poors streaming experiences. Today the “Customer Loyalty Dept” said they no longer can restore or offer the 5 MBPS we had before the so called upgrade. They only want to push you to PRISM where all development dollars are parked now.

Of course, Customer Loyalty title is deceptive. It really is the Department of “LAST RESORT,” the “dead end” place when frontline employees can no longer explain consumer’s problems & the bad news has to be delivered to you. Many reports here of being hung up on, also my experience, can be explained by this creation of management forward thinking. Check out the bio of PRISMs creator, who may have sold a “pig in the poke” to Centurylink for which consumers & employees will pay the freight now.

We are 35 year Qwest/US WEST customer wondering what really ruined US West (aka Quest, aka Centurylink, aka PRISM) with the last being the worst experience.

Besides consumers, you have to feel bad for the long time employees that stuck it out thru all these buyouts and mergers. The FTC must have been sleeping at the switch while all these mergers/buyouts were waved through. There are 100s of complaints on many consumer sites.

Called again 5 days after that, spoke to escalations, “I am so sorry about all your trouble, we will get this fixed for you right now”. Noted everything they would be giving me for that promotion and read the notes back to me. Also told me he would watch my account and call me if there were any issues, that was 5/25. Today is 7/1. I contacted them again today, promotion not added to my account. Contacted the BBB, CL refuses to pull call records or acknowledge what was quoted to me on 3 different calls. Initially, my experience with customer service and the actual product (internet) was quite good. I was able to reach people, work out any issues during a change of address, and had fast internet speeds. Then, I got orders to deploy (I’m in the Army), so I called to inform them that I’d need to cancel service. I spoke to a very helpful representative who walked me through the cancellation process and assured me I was good to go…then after I actually deployed, they charged me $50 for an ‘early cancellation’. I sent them a message asking about the charge and was told not to worry, it’ll be refunded. Four days later they not only failed to refund my money but they CHARGED ME AN ADDITIONAL $130 WITHOUT ANY EXPLANATION! I sent them another message, much more strongly worded because I hoped to get the attention of anyone with the power to help me. I never received a response, except a message to say that I should just give them a call. Yeah, because that’s really easy to do from the other side of the world during a deployment. I have lost all respect for this company and the way they do business. I hope that everyone who reads this takes their business elsewhere. If CenturyLink is going to treat deployed Soldiers this poorly, just imagine how they’ll treat you.

I have been working with computers and the internet since the early 80’s. Centurylinks product reminds me of going backwards to about the mid 90’s in performance. The pricing is to high by comparison to competitors with similar speeds. The customer service has been contrary or non-responsive at best. Only a fool such as myself would believe the “we answer all email” unless the consider the auto response to be their answer. Their cable contractor drove his rig through my neighbors yard and made no attempt at fixing or apologizing. The installer put the box on the outside of the house and then left without installing it to the phone jack. I haven’t yet nailed down what they are doing but email from them is instantaneous, from other sites it can take hours if it comes at all, This makes performing online commerce or bill paying inconvenient to put it the best way possible. I can’t wait to be done with this company.

I tried to close a internet account with this company at thanksgiving time of 2014. Had not been able to log on for over 4 months. After trying to resolve the problem with the service I was told they would have to send a technician out for a fee I was not willing to pay. Told them to cancel service. was transferred to another person in another country .

I personally had spent over 6 hours on the phone trying to get the problem fixed. All they would do is bounce me around from one person to another in various third world countries till I would give up.

After many attempts to cancel service I was transferred to someone in Boise Id. who said I had a bad modem and that there was a faster service available than I had been told about for the last few months.

I was quoted a price that was ok and told I would have to buy a modem. I refused and said the only way I would stay with them is if they supplied a free modem and the price available for new customers, I would then agree to a one year contract, otherwise cancel the service. I was put on hold (again) and when he came back on line was told that I would get the agreed on price for the speed agreed on plus the free wireless modem.

After months of trying to get the billing to reflect what was agreed to this account is being placed into collection for the price of the free modem . No one shows any records of any of the numerous conversations about this account. The bill has always been paid (except for the modem), Hasn’t worked, couldn’t get anyone to just check the modem without a charge for a unneeded service call, has been overcharged , been lied to about services available.

This is the worst rip off company I have ever tried to deal with either because of stupidity or they are intentionally lying and trying to rip off people.

And I blurted it out not even thinking. And he said I don’t have it.I am so furious about all of this, and I blame Centurylink, because for some reason if this guy wasn’t with centurylink he got my info from their info. And if I would have gotten a confirmation number or email or both then I would have known this was handled and not to worry about the call and would have just given him the number.I hold them personally responsible if anything happens or if I get billed, and I am putting them on notice now with this complaint that I will not pay any bills or be in any contract because I did cancel my installation on the Jan 3rd Jan 5 Jan 6 2015.

Sales rep seemed very eager to help me get started but now I think it was because she works on commission because everything I was told was a lie. I was told my bill would be under $100 a month because I didn’t go with the phone line and there were no installation cost. My fist bill was almost $200 dollars. I called and complained several times they dropped the installation charge on the bill but the next bill was 160 I called again and they dropped it down to 140 and said my next one should be what it will normally be. It got down too 126$ a month, still not below $100 as promised when I signed up. I just received a notification in the mail stating they would be increasing my bill….I am supposed to be on a fixed rate for a year?!?!?! Now it’s back up to $130. Internet modems constantly need resetting and wifi is terrible. I was promised atleast 15mbps if tv is off I barley get 8. The installation took forever. The tech said he had to go find the main hub which is right around the corner. He was gone for 3 hours and said he couldn’t find it. Idk if he was being honest or not. I called in today 12/30/2014 1302MST and spoke with a female agent first. I informed her I wanted to cancel my account (Century Link Account Number 719-488-3166 592) and she then said ok, verified me, then transferred me. I then got another female in the “Retention” department, ( I didn’t write down her name even though I always get horrible customer service from Century Link, every single time I’ve ver called in, so I should’ve but I guess I just had “faith” maybe this time I would get good customer service since I’m cancelling my account). That female agent (2nd agent I spoke with that day) was very rude, did not explain anything clearly, she was absolutely horrible.. I then told her I want to speak to her Supervisor, she then completely interrupted me and just transferred me. I then sat on hold and at this point I had been on the phone for 45 minutes. That agent failed me; failed Century Link; by transferring me to the Finance Department where I then spoke with Sarah ID# TELC101 (or so she gave me). I then told her what happened and told her to please transfer me to the department where I can close my account. She then transferred me to Tech Support where I was then speaking to John ID# AB18631 and I informed him of everything that previously happened and once I again I was given horrible customer service by every agent and I asked for his Supervisor since I felt just about done, I then spoke with Supervisor Andrew where I informed him of everything that was happening and he transferred me to the “Retention” department again. I was waiting on hold again and at this point was on the phone for 57 minutes and 32 seconds, ridiculous to just cancel an account wouldn’t you say? He then said he was transferring me and I then the next department I landed in was the DirectTv department, informed that female agent of what happened and I then was hopefully being transferred to the Retention department whee, of course, I wasn’t, she transferred me to the Collections Department. I was then speaking with Amanda who I had informed what happened and she told me she was Collections and I then hung up on her because I noticed the number and it was Supervisor Andrew, he told me we got disconnected but I was just being transferred, he then transferred me back to “Retention”, we waited on hold so long he said he would have to call me back to redo the call. I had no chance to say anything he didn’t wait to listen to me he just hung up. I then got a call back from him about a minute later and he once again didn’t even give me a chance to talk just said I’m going to place you on hold and then put me on hold. The customer service is absolutely atrocious and the worst out of any other customer service I have ever experienced and everyone says that about Century Link, major production studios make comedy jokes about how horrible your customer service is. I then waited on hold again for an extremely long time. I’m still currently sitting on hold totaling my current call time with Century Link at 1 hour and 39 minutes. Unbelievable. I signed up for CenturyLink in February 2014 right after moving into my Omaha apartment because the rates were competitive and the specks were comparable to COX in a very good way. I thought I was getting a steel. I quickly learned that was not the case. Upon receiving my modem, I learned that my house wasn’t wired for DSL. That was fine, I called the CenturyLink help line and they told me that they would send someone out to set it up for me, I just had to make the appointment. I was transferred to the appointment line where I was told that someone could come out the next Friday (and seeing how I called on a Thursday that was an entire week away) sometime between eight and four-thirty. I said that was fine but that I worked on Friday so it would be best if they came at four and I would just get off early. I was then informed that I couldn’t make an appointment for a specific time but that the tec would actually arrive sometime between eight and four-thirty.
“I have work,” I said. “I can’t take a whole day off just to get my internet installed.”
The man told me he was sorry but that that was my only real option. I made the appointment, thanked him, hung up and promptly called COX.
“If I switch my internet from CenturyLink to COX right now,” I said, “When is the soonest that you could get someone out to set it up.”
“I could have someone out tomorrow.”
“I work tomorrow.”
“That’s alright,” the man said. “I can get you an appointment for the evening. What time do you get off work?”
“4:30.”
“I have a slot from 5-8. Someone would arrive between then.” I took it.
Immediately after I called CenturyLink to have my service cancelled. What I didn’t realize was that, for whatever reason, the account wasn’t closed but I didn’t realize that until I got a bill in March for an internet service that I never even had. I called right away and informed them of the problem and that I wanted to have my account closed. I was told explicitly that the account had been closed but in April I received another bill, this time for twice the amount. I called CenturyLink again and asked to have the account closed. I was again told that the account was officially closed.
In May I received another bill and, after a long and arduous conversation with several people bouncing me back and forth, the final person I spoke with then informed me that he would place a request for credit to have the account zeroed out. I thanked him and said I would call back to verify in a few weeks. Before I called back I received another bill, this time from a collection agency. I again called CenturyLink to inquire on the status of the credit. I was told that the paperwork had been misfiled and that this new person would file it correctly. I was again informed that the account had been zeroed out.
Fast forward to December 19. I’ve just received my third collection call from the debt agency in charge of my apparently outstanding debt. I called CenturyLink after each agency call and was told twice that my account had been balanced out. Today I called again and was informed that, not only was the account still holding a nearly 300 dollar charge but that the credit had been denied and no one bothered to tell me. At this point, I just paid the charge because I can’t believe anything else they say to me. I don’t even fully believe that the account has been paid. I guess I’ll find out when I get my next bill but, should that happen, I will gladly inform them that I have bank records saying that the money was withdrawn from my account.
The only nice thing I have to say about CenturyLink is that the people I worked with were professional, kind and, at the very least, pretended to be helpful but that doesn’t make up for the months of what essentially adds up to lies, manipulation and inflated charges (for service that I never even HAD mind). I would never, ever recommend CenturyLink and I strongly caution anyone from getting into bed with them in the future.

With todays content that speed just is terrible and the local repair men tell me Centurylink just does not want to spend any money to upgrade for the 25 or so homes in my area. Con: Why hasn't the Attorney General shut them down?

A cute Centurylink salesgirl came by our door and promised faster speeds and better security then I was getting with Cox cable all at a lower price. She also said it would be a seamless switch. So, we said we’d try it. That was the beginning of the nightmare. Aren’t there some laws about fraudulently misrepresenting a product?
First of all they never sent us the modem as they promised so when their installer came to install he couldn’t. Called Centurylink they told us to go pick one up and gave us the address. (1hr) Went where they told us to go and were told they didn’t handle that equipment at that location and they sent us to another location. (1.5hrs) Brought modem home and called Centurylink again to reschedule installer. Installer came by when we were out of town. So, I went ahead and installed the equipment myself. (2hrs – I’m not a tech guy) Noticed that speeds were VERY slow and did test at speedtest.net and was only getting like .6mbps download. Called CL tech support and they told me I had to test through their site speedtest.centurylink.net so I did. Still only getting .6 mbps download speeds. Tech then wanted me to start troubleshooting things with him and I told him I wanted an installer to come out and handle this – as promised. He told me it would cost me $75 dollars to have a tech out. He then switched me to Customer Service to set up the tech. Customer Service told me they didn’t schedule techs, that was Tech Support’s job. However, during this call I also discovered that the MAXIMUM download speed I could possibly get, based on my location, was 8mbps and .8mbps upload. This took another 3hrs of my time. So, I hung up, and called Cox and asked them what kind of speeds I was paying for currently. (.5hr) Now, here’s the kicker – I was paying for 100mbps download speeds with Cox. How was it even possible that CL can claim they would be faster??? I believe the basic internet cable service with Cox starts at 25mbps. So, I called CL back again and cancelled my service. They told me they would send me a return mailing ticket for the modem – that was over a week ago, still no ticket. (another .5hr) Now, I reconnect all my old Cox stuff back up, only to discover that I had now had no phone. (1hr) So, I had to call Cox again and spent 1hr on the phone with them only to discover that CL had already switched my phone over (even though I never had one second of service with CL) and they would have to send a tech out to switch it back over at the pole/switch box, but that would take 3 days. Three days later now and still no phone. Meanwhile I just got a bill from CL so now I’ll be on the phone with them AGAIN. It’s very important that you note that to this point in time I have already spent 10.5 hours on something that was promised to be seamless! I find Centurylink to be unethical, unreliable, inefficient and just plain incompetent. Avoid this company like the plague.

I’ve was with Qwest for a long time until CenturyLink took it over. I hardly ever had to call Customer Service for anything. What nightmare. Terrible Customer Service and outsourced Tech support. The most recent debacle was with them over simply sending my DirecTV back to DirecTV. That was not done but they unbundled the services and raised the price.

I emailed them and called over 3+ months and every time was worse that the one before. They even implied I was a liar. I had to contact the highest tier of Customer Service at the DirecTV to resolve the whole thing. I’d had bills sent back to DirecTV before as well as one other with no problems. Not this time.

The there’s the problem of Internet speed. I was told that I could only get 3meg Internet in my area. One time I called Customer Service for something. The CSR said I was going to get a free upgrade to 5meg Internet. I was uneasy because there’s no such thing as free with these people. I did get the 5megs. In a few months, I received an email from CenturyLink that my ‘promo’ rate had expired and that they raised my Internet price $15. Immediately after that the speed went down to 3megs but the additional $15 price hike stayed. I did several speed tests recently, at different days and times. The Internet speed was 2.0 or 2.2 at best all the time. Lower during peak usage times. They are charging me almost $48 for that.

I’m had it with them. You’d think that with Comcast tearing them limb from limb over their terrible drops in Internet speed they’d do the right thing. Never. I have a decision to make but it’s has to be choosing between the lesser of two evils. Not many providers here.

This is the worst company I have ever had dealings with. I pay for 1.5 Mbps, yet my actual speed right now is closer to .10 Mbps. I don’t know what the actual speed is because it is too slow for the speedtest to even finish. Service works most of the time (we get 1.0 Mbps) but these slowdowns are unnacceptable.

Customer Service is inept and incompetent. The technicians always do the same checklist approach then tell you the problem is due to your equipment (Hint: It isn’t). You wait 30 minutes minimum to even speak to someone over the phone.

It’s a scam, more or less.

I don’t normally take the time to right reviews, but I’ve had such a bad experience that I felt it was my responsibility to warn others….
I was so frustrated with Comcast that I was desperate to find another provider. Century Link was the only other option in my area. I needed a way to stream Game Of Thrones from my HBOGO app, so I thought id give it a go. I signed up over the phone, which was my first mistake. I told customer service I was only interested in simple cable and wifi. I had no interest in the other overpriced add ons. It was at that time I was notified of a “special”…you get cable, wifi, AND a phone line for $87 which was less then purchasing the wifi and cable bundle. Phone line? Umm ok! Seemed weird. I told the rep I didn’t have a home phone BUT if it saved me money, count me in. I paid a $200 deposit to start the service and was notified that my first bill may be slightly higher. Ok, no problem. From what I remember, Comcast does the same thing. The service rep in charge of installing my equipment, was nice but showed up late even though I was the first appointment. He didn’t have all his equipment so he left and reappeared 30 min. later to continue the install. Annoyed!!
My first bill arrived with a whopping $149 charge. Whoa! Ok, so a little higher.
The 2nd bill showed up with a charge of $168. Wait, that’s not right. I agreed to a fee of $87. Where is this charge coming from?! I called customer service to help me understand my bill. Of course I get one with an additude. Just my luck. She proceeds to tell me that I had been signed up for a completely different plan then what had been explained. After being on the phone with her at airing at my account for over an HOUR, because of the “contract” that I had agreed to, I wouldn’t be able to cancel the current plan without an early termination fee. At that point, I started to get upset. THIS IS NOT AT ALL WHAT I HAD AGREED TO. So of course I asked to speak to a supervisor….not once, not twice, but three times. The cust. service rep was avoiding my request. I was being talked over, as if I her fast talking me was going to help the situation. It only made things worse. I was finally put in touch with a supervisor who assured me that my account had been corrected…the cost was put back to $87, the phone line had been cancelled, and I wouldnt acrue any cancellation fees. I requested a confirmation of this via email and I was told it was against their company policy. Hmmm?!? Ok! I was then provided with a credit for my troubles, which would show up on MY NEXT BILL. Let me just say, Comcast may be terrible but if they say they are giving you a credit, they apply it right then and there. You don’t have to wait until your next bill.
So my next bill arrives and much to my surprise I was charged $188 AFTER a $50 credit. Wait, so you gave me a $50 credit then what was my bill prior to the credit? Why am I being charged so much for cable and wifi?! I call customer service…AGAIN, so my bill can be explained. I’ve never had to work so hard to correct a problem. The rep WAS NOT NICE AT ALL. She seemed to think that I should be greatful to have received a $50 credit. This put me through the roof. Really?? I should be greatful!? I’ve had service for 4 months with a company that has obvious issues with training their staff. Ive called every other week for almost 4 months and I’ve spoken with over a dozen customer service reps at this point to fix my account, they are all looking at the same computer screen, and yet none of them can tell me why my account is so f*****d up. Unreal!!
I cancelled my service right then and there. I didn’t want to know about new specials, I didn’t want to hear what it would take to keep me as a customer, I just wanted to cancel. I repeated myself 3 times. So my next question…I’ve got over $250 worth of promised credits coming my way. Are those credits going to be applied before you send me my final bill or NEVER?! She couldn’t seem to give me a straight answer. She didn’t have much of an answer for anything.
I received the return equipment box in the mail, I packaged up the equipment, and shipped it back. I received a final bill from Century Link yest. and according to their records, after all my credits were applied and my deposit had been deducted from the “cancellation costs”, I STILL OWED THEM $87. Isn’t that a f*****g hoot?! I CALLED AND HANDED THEM THEIR A**. After everything that I’ve been through in this very short period of time, they should be writing ME a check. I felt so bad because I had actually managed to get a really nice rep this time. He couldn’t believe my account. He said 9 pages of notes seemed to be excessive for a customer of only 4 months. He transferred me to a very nice supervisor who cleared my account of any charges.
I thought about it this morning and between the $200 deposit they kept and the 3 full months of “service” I received, Centiry Link managed to collect $707 dollars from me. And here’s the kicker, there wifi and cable service was worse then Comcast has ever been. I will never recommend this company to anyone. Save yourself the trouble.

There is so many things wrong with this company, that I don’t even know where to begin. I have a vacation rental and we needed to provide some form of Internet and Television service. I called Centurylink and told the rep I spoke with that I only wanted to pay around 40 to 50 per month, and that if they didn’t have anything around that price then I wouldn’t waste their or my time. He kept coming up with things that were closer to $100 and I told him again that I wasn’t interested. He finally said that they had another option and that I could have basic television and internet for around $44 per month. I said great let’s do it. He signed me up and then when my first bill came, it was for $129. I thought there had to be some connection fees that I was being billed for. When I received my next bill, it was for $95. I called them and was told that was the total for the services I had signed up for. I argued with them forever and got nowhere so I told them to cancel my service. They said fine, but I had to return the modem first. I returned the modem and was expecting to receive a credit and when my next bill came, not only was there not any credits, but they were billing me for the next months service. I called again and was told that they didn’t receive the modem. I had used UPS and had a tracking number showing that it was returned. They argued with me and I told them I was going to my attorney general’s office for assistance. They finally closed my account, but when I received my next bill, they had charged me a $200 early termination fee. How can I have an early termination fee when I never signed a contract? I have had it with them and will be reporting them to my attorney general’s office as well as the FCC due to their bait and switch tactics.

CenturyLink BLATANTLY lied to us when we were looking for an internet provider. They told us that their service would be much faster than our current provider (Comcast). FALSE! We got 1.5 mbps on a good day as compared to Comcast’s consistent 20 mbps. Less than 1/10 of the speed!!! Our internet was so slow that we couldn’t do any streaming at all, something that we had specifically asked about. Even basic internet surfing was frustratingly slow. It took several calls to get our line buried. They lied AGAIN, and said they’d never gotten a service order. I guess that Blue Stake came out and marked our lot by using a crystal ball. When we called 3 weeks into our service to cancel our service because of their lies and deceptive selling tactics, they told us that we had a 1-year contract. FALSE! We asked to see any document which showed that we had signed a contract or any voice recording agreeing to a contract (which many other companies do). Instead of giving us proof, they just kept talking in circles. They were going to charge us $200 for cancelling the fictitious contract. After over an hour of going around and and being transferred to several different “customer service” agents, the $200 was waived, but only as long as our internet was shut off the same day. This is the 2nd time we have had such bad service from CenturyLink. We thought maybe the first time was a fluke. Nope! It’s their regular practice! Ironically, this is the message I got when I tried to go to CenturyLink’s customer service email to log a complaint: “The connection has timed out The server at qc.centurylink.com is taking too long to respond.” Worst and RUDEST customer service people EVER!

this is the only internet service in my area. not even satellite internet works in my area as far as i know. the connection used to drop out at 6:10 pm every day, but I found out that there was a loose connection that apparently disconnected completely because of the lunar tide effect where the moon affects earth’s gravity. after taping the loose phone plug into the wall, it has only dropped service around ten-fifteen times over the last FOUR years! I got the service back when it was still embarq. we started off with the 1MBPS plan, but we never got more than 365KBPS download speed. the download speed began to drop soon after the change to centurylink, and they began sending letters saying we were using an extremely large amount of internet, and included an “offer” to upgrade our current contract to the next plan up. we let ourselves be conned into buying the 3MBPS and our internet speed, instead of raising it up to something higher than what we had before, went right back up to 365KBPS peak. it stayed stable for up until a couple of months ago. they started slowing down the internet and sending the high bandwidth letters again. eventually they gave up trying to con us into their 10MBPS plan and returned our internet speed to 365KBPS. If you do get the centurylink internet service do not choose anything above the 1MBPS plan as you will NOT get any speeds higher than 365 KBPS. otherwise is is an EXTEMELY stable internet provider in my opinion. they may not be able to provide any higher than less than half their cheapest plan but they almost never have service shutdowns.

The loading bar for the video won’t fully before the video plays, its just stops at a point. When the marker finally reaches the point it stops, it will continuously buffer. But it just goes to show when you go cheap and try to save yourself a dime..you end up getting a cheap product. Other than looking like a relatively cheap costing service Century Link has been a nightmare. They started by attaching my brand new, never been a customer before, account to some deadbeat that used to live ay my house. This means I now get collection calls for someone else. They said they fixed that and started my service, but the service was awful – poor speeds and no connections. Afters hours on the phone and additional billing errors I cancelled service. I returned equipment and even got my refund only to have them say I still owe them for the equipment that was already returned and refunded! I am still dealing with them trying to get this straightened out correctly. And they immediately sent my new account to collection because it was closed, but they say I owe them money – so I was sent to collection before I even got my final bill! Paying ~ $55/month for 3Mbps ADSL in rural Oregon, but rarely achieve that rate. We actually see about 1.7Mbps downlink rate at 3-8AM, but it seems that the area is oversubscribed, so rates at peak hours are typically much lower.

Had a dry line (which worked for internet) for the first 8 months of service. I only discovered this after attempting to check the line with a telephone during a service outage. I thought for sure that my service was out due to a problem with my line, as there was no dialtone. to my chagrin, the internet service was restored, and I still had no PSTN (dialtone) nor 48V on the line. After being asked to remove the excess charges for telephone, which I was not supplied, centurylink fixed the issue by connecting my line to the PSTN, but did not refund me for unneeded service which was not provided.

For some time I did suffer disconnection every night (probably during DHCP reassignment) for several weeks; however, this went away after I called to complain.

Additionally I had frequent random disconnects for the first year of service.

I did have significant problems getting service established, first order was canceled without notifying me. After calling to inquire where the installation technician was, I was told that DSL service was not available at my address, and my order was canceled. I did ask why I was not notified, but my query was not answered. Days later, after complaining that several of my neighbors already had centurylink DSL service, centurylink agreed once again to schedule a test of my line.

This installation service call was subsequently canceled because of an inch of snow. I know that working in the snow is not fun, but I thought that 1 inch of snow here in mountainous rural Oregon is a pretty common event, and was a bit annoyed that the installation was again delayed.

About three months after my initial order, a friendly technician arrived to check my line which was apparently OK for 3Mbps even though centurylink is not able to deliver that measly bandwidth due to oversubscription which I mentioned above.

About 1.5 years later, the download rate plummeted, and I had another technician come out and recheck the line. They found unused tap on the line a half mile up the road which were removed, apparently the initial installation was not performed diligently (a tap left on the line, and PSTN not connected), but now my 3AM downlink rate was once again near 2.4Mbps.

Over the last three years of service, I noticed significant degradation of downlink rate at service peaks. It goes on for a while, I bet it goes on until enough customers start complaining, then it is suddenly fixed for several months (upgraded equipment, or some rate limit adjusted in “local” aggregation equipment I would guess).

I have not seen the bandwidth that I am paying for for much of the last three years.

I guess that is what to expect when dealing with a monopoly! Good thing I’m living in the greatest country on earth; otherwise, I would have to suffer fast service at inexpensive rates like those poor suckers living in South Korea or Romania.

Centurylink does not deserve one star for the service they provide here in rural Oregon, but there are no alternatives for a ow latency connection.

Go corporate USA!

P.S. Don’t tell anyone, but I heard from my right-wing neighbors that we also have the best public health system available in the world right here in the good ole USA.

It was time to drop Century link, the best speed I could get was 12mps and I know it was much less than that. For 30 bucks a month I will upgrade to Comcast for 25Mps so I will be able to compare.

I have read some of the reviews. I have to say I agree with some of them. I TOTALLY agree that since Qwest was bought out by Century Link–NOT GOOD!! The price for the internet service is UNREAL!! I can’t remember ever having SOOO many problems back when it was Qwest. I had my tower cleaned up twice since I got it less than 4 years ago. I was told that’s about the same time CL took over!! I am going back to Linksys modem. I still have mine from awhile ago–thank goodness!! I’m not even sure how to rate things about CL!!!

I just switched to CenturyLink about a week ago and have had the same problems with “dropped internet” ever since. I have been sent 3 different modems with the same problem. The tech even came out and changed us to another port at the main pedestal down the road because he said the one we were on was bad. Still waiting on it to be fixed!

Oh, and try to get a phone rep. where English is their first language. I’ve had to have them repeat the same thing over and over because they can’t speak very well.

I’m very frustrated with them at the moment, but I’m giving them another week to fix the problem before I switch back to Cox!

I called to see about internet service. Was with Comcast but SO EXPENSIVE. Amber was nice and said the earliest they could connect service would be the following week. I agreed to the appointment. I was told Monday between 9AM and 1PM.. Amber informed me that the tech should more than likely be there right at 9AM. So I waited and waited. Finally I called at 2 PM and the Customer service rep (male) stated that he was running just a little bit behind but was in the area and she be at my home shortly. He said just give him until 5 PM in case he gets held up again. I said not a problem! It is now Wednesday 10:15 AM and still no knock on door nor has there been a phone call. I think if this is the service I get before being a customer I do not need this company!! I am waiting to see if they send me a bill in the mail for services I do not have. They only way I would have this company is if it was free. This is not how you get clients and keep them. Unbelievable!!!! Too bad the stars below didn’t go to the negative because that is where mine would be.

Con: Customer Service, Internet Service

The only thing worse than the customer service at CenturyLink (when I first signed up they gave me the wrong phone number and proceeded to blame me for the problem) is their Internet service. It is slow, many times less than 1MB down, and it just quits working as many as 7 – 10 times per day. I have to reboot the router each time and wait for it to come back up. It will then work for anywhere from 20 minutes to a couple of hours, and then it stops again. The feeble attempts by their technical(ly inept) support is no help. The outages happen frequently but not on a regular basis for them to catch it so their answer is they will probably never be able to fix it. They have the billing down just fine. No interruptions or outages when it comes time to take my money. I have no choice for Internet service, (which is why they could care less if my service works) but if you do, never, ever, ever sign up with this awful company.

Pro: There was 2 nice customer service people

Con: EVERYTHING ELSE

So as this horrible experience started I moved my home phone number to vonage to save some money and to get their most expensive internet and highest speed 40 Mbps. Once the number was transferred I called them up to upgrade my internet and they told me a account cancellation was in order. I asked why or if it could be stopped and the person said they didnt know why and could not stop it. Few days later our internet was shut off completely. We called to get it reconnected and they said they could not for 30 days we tried to find out why or get this time span changed and got nowhere. We tried again in a few days and delt with the worst suprivisors ever not only could they not help they completely treated us like thieves for trying to switch our home phone when we wanted to buy their most expensive internet plan in its place. We had to call over 5 times and none of their customer service could help till the last that said for some reason the system wont let them reconnect our line but we could sign up as a new customer. Annoyed and angry we told them fine do that and guess what it took 20 days to get them to plug it in for the bogus reason they had to send a tech to install a phone filter so we cant use the line with a home phone.

We had to use a cricket 3g internet adapter for a month just to have any form of internet which is required to have a home phone through vonage. After the long wait and finally getting the internet hooked up it worked fine for 1 week then low and behold the internet was dead without reason.

We dealt with customer service again and they told us it would take around 10 days to send a tech to diagnose the problem… But finally we had a customer service lady who thought that was wrong so she called and got the days bumped down to about 4.

So when the tech came and said the line had been disconnected by “mistake” in their phone node and they plugged it back in. The internet working again would be a good thing right? Wrong a month later the internet died mysteriously again and so here we were on the phone again with customer service and they again told us 7-8 days to fix it. The lady worked with us and called the techs directly who said they had time in 2 days to fix it. They didn’t know why the system said 8 days.

When the tech came they said our line wire had been physically cut and they fixed it up for us without further issue and even came to our house and checked our box to be sure that would fix it. Explain to me how JUST OUR internet was unplugged and physically cut and all our neighbors internet was fine and they use century link too.

By far centurylink is the worst company i have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. We had to fight them on everything just to get them to do their job. I cannot even believe they are still in business when they treat their customers like a bunch of manure. Wouldnt surprise me if the suprivisors who were a complete and total a holes to us were the ones who unplugged it and cut the wire. Its like the only qualification to be a suprivisor at century link is treat customers like worthless manure and dont by any means try to help them, just let them be pissed and rub it in their face that century link is the only provider offering the speeds you need. Truly i wish i was making this up atleast then it would be a funny story, but sadly its true and oh so bitterly true.

Cut your losses and just go with any other company. Pay more if you have to its worth it! Even when our internet works we never get near our 40 Mbps connection, we are lucky to get 15 Mbps to 25 Mbps. We never were able to get that promised 40 Mbps, or even the promised 1.5 Mbps upload speed. I never thought i would miss qwest but atleast they kept our internet up and had nice customer service if it stopped working. Sure they were overpriced but it worked which is worth it! If you have to pay a bit more for internet from another company do it by all means you will thank yourself in the future!

Ive been a customer with quest/century link for almost 5 years. On my most recent call to century link, i was told in order to move my services (which is internet, because they charge too much for everything else) i would need to buy another new modem, which i already bought a few years back. For some reason, which they could not explain, the modem i have which has worked just fine in every other place iv lived, won’t work in our new apartment. The supervisor refused to speak to me, he was passing messages back and forth between the representative, finally after asking to be transferred several more times, i was transferred to another one of the managers in salt lake city whose name is Mauricio. Mauricio called me a liar, saying that noone would have ever told me that buying one modem would be acceptable, according to Mauricio most people replace their modems yearly….. which i know is false cause noone is going to spend $100 bucks a year, these aren’t things you throw away every time you move.

The internet i will be getting at the new apartment is exactly the same as the one i have now, but they tried to lie to me to get more money out of me. Whenever i told Mauricio that, he threatened to terminate the call if i kept disrespecting him. What a joke. I would rather pay more money with a different company that doesn’t lie to me and screw up my bill on a monthly basis then deal with any of the people at century link. They simply do not care about their customers weather you’ve been with them for a day or ten years, you do not matter. You are just another stupid consumer putting money into their pockets. Save yourself some time, and go with someone else. You will be highly disappointed and frustrated by the time your done dealing with century link.

Pro: picture quality very good

Con: terrible internet, tv features inadequat

Never again! I was lied to by salesman. Features promised not delivered. Pricing almost exactly matched Cox … all advertised savings are bogus. Modem/router could not deliver contract speeds, had to hardwire my old router to get nearly acceptable service. National help desk rep was a jerk. Install destroyed my Cox wiring … told by Century Link it was my tough luck (national help desk). Prism repair rep was very nice! Having entire system removed after less than 24 hours in service, mainly due to all of the lying by everyone except the Prism repair rep. I am probably going to switch my phone to Cox because I am so angry over this.
Looks like the “new boss is same as the old boss”. Sprint to Embarq to Century Link. New names for the same old garbage. Wish I could get Prism TV without Century Link involvement.

Wether I use the wi-fi on my laptop to send work e-mails, or watch a movie on our plugged in broadband connection, the internet connection is dropped every 15 minutes or so. I continuously log back in or unplug modem or… I call and spend over an hour on the phone with customer service about twice a month. They rarely respond, and have often closed the service request, saying “the problem is solved” without ever checking in with me. Avoid! Avoid! I am finally ready to pay the cost to switch to another provider.

I automatically got switched over to Centurylink from Qwest and the customer service immediately changed for the worse. They changed my contract without telling me and put me in a 3 year lease that I didn’t sign up for with Qwest. The website is terrible, logging in to a website to make a payment has never been so difficult. Internet runs slow. Customer service reps have no desire to keep their customers by the way the talk to you. I spoke with a RANDY who was the worst customer service agent I have ever spoken with and made it clear I was making the right decision to terminate my plan. I paid an early termination of $520 to get out… that’s how terrible it is.

Pro: FAST (when its working !?!!!)

Con: PROBLEMS ALL THE TIME, YOU NAME IT

Well we haven’t even had service for 2 weeks and WE ARE TOTALLY DONE w/ this company. Maybe one could say our expectations are TOO HIGH – such as CONTINUOUS NON STOP INTERNET ACCESS. Well it works great WHEN ITS WORKING. I have spent a good hour on the phone JUST TODAY and numerous calls NOT EVEN FOR THE SAME PROBLEMS. Several calls yesterday same thing. Maybe since this service has been installed there have been a few quiet days WHEN NOTHING HAPPENED (that is no calls to their customer service line) or maybe we just weren’t using it much on these days. IF YOU WORK FROM HOME OR YOUR WORK DEPENDS ON GOOD INTERNET CONNECTION then might want to (((seriously))) go w/ SOME OTHER COMPANY. We used Cox for several years prior to getting an offer to try quest (30day money back guarantee, $50 visa gift card, no contracts, 29/mth at speed 7/2). The night this was installed i was on the line to customer service then everyday for several days after. They sent the same technician out to look at the system who found faulty wiring at the box (ok no problem – ITS FIXED !?!!????). Then every since one call after another for this or that. Believe me I AM NOT EXAGGERATING.

In all fairness perhaps when they get all the kinks worked out then MAYBE IT WILL BE A GOOD SERVICE – assuming that your ancient phone lines in your house are still up to speed (or they will charge you to redo your lines) ours are fine so far atleast but as this continues that will probably be the next thing they say – our phone lines are whack!

Just got off the phone w/ them and they said this time there was some problem ON THERE END w/ the connection to the server or some technical jargon and that the technician magically fixed it by pushing a panic button! I asked what his name was so we could be on a first name basis NEXT TIME I CALL – he didn’t sound amused and said that THERE WONT BE A NEXT TIME because ITS FIXED.

Ok lets see if this message i just took the time to type gets sent or if the signal stops working and it gets lost in cyberspace (sorry for the ramble but we are very dissatisfied w/ this service!)

Until next time………………
