A broadband service offers you an internet connection that is always on and available; you can speak on the telephone while surfing the net and it is fast enough for applications such as downloading videos and track and using VoIP internet telephony.
Broadband services come in different forms and the broadband service that you choose depends on your own personal requirements and preferences.
When browsing through the various broadband internet service plans out there, you will see that you can choose a DSL, satellite or cable broadband service or achieve a wireless broadband service in your home either through installing a router for home networking; or by taking out a wireless broadband service plan.
The differences between the broadband service options usually come down to cost and speed. The cheapest broadband service is usually derived through a DSL connection, which uses your existing telephone line to transmit data. The disadvantages associated with a DSL broadband service is that a connection can only be established from a short distance away from a telephone exchange.
Arguably faster is a cable broadband service; although it is limiting in the fact that cable connections are only available in large cities and towns and fewer vendors mean there is often less choice of packages. In addition, your cable broadband service may well slow down if a lot of people in your area tries to access the internet at the same time.
If you are in the middle of nowhere and want a broadband service, then a satellite broadband service may be your only option. It is available from almost anywhere, but it is notoriously unreliable, slow and expensive. A satellite broadband service is not suitable for gaming or internet telephony.
An alternative to a satellite broadband service is a wireless broadband service; not to be confused with wifi. A broadband service achieved through a DSL or cable connection and then routed through the home to a compatible computing device is called a wifi connection. Wifi ‘hotspots’ are required in order to achieve connectivity and the broadband service range through this method is not the best.
A true wireless broadband service can be achieved with a small dish that can be mounted in a high place in order to receive a signal from a transmitter. Mobile wireless broadband service providers from the likes of Verizon, Sprint and AT&T utilize cell phone towers in order to transmit signals for a more mobile version of this type of access.
