One million satellite broadband customers in the United States

Recently released figures have shown that the number of satellite broadband customers in the United States has reached one million, and this could increase further as the technology continues to improve.

Whilst most of us are used to getting our broadband services via cable or copper wire networks there are some people that are unable to access this technology, and instead are opting for satellite broadband services. However, the set up costs for satellite broadband can be costly, and overall satellite broadband services are slower and far more expensive than standard broadband services.

However, despite this a recent report has shown that the number of subscribers to satellite broadband in the United States has now increased to around one million, and officials believe that as the technology improves this number may continue to grow. Although one million may not be a huge figure when compared to the number of people that subscribe to regular broadband services it is still a number that reflect significant growth within the sector.

The report was released by Northern Sky Research, and officials believe that the number of people signing up to satellite broadband is set to increase further in the future. This is as a result of more advanced satellite technology being launched, which officials have said could result in far lower costs, better service, and faster speeds, all of which could result in an increasing number of people taking an interest in satellite broadband services.

A spokesperson for Northern Sky Research stated: “…the imminent launch of the second generation of high throughput satellites (HTS) like ViaSat-1, KaSat, Jupiter and even Hylas-1 will finally change the core economics of satellite broadband access services.”
