Mobile broadband market boosted by iPad – LTE could increase competition

It has been announced that the mobile broadband device market in the United States and globally is being boosted by the availability of the iPad and other mobile internet enabled devices.

Over the past couple of years internet enabled devices have become increasingly popular in the United States and in many other countries around the world. A huge number of both casual and business users now rely on mobile internet devices such as smart phones and tablets, and for many the availability of mobile broadband devices has given them a huge amount of flexibility and ease.

It is thought that mobile broadband card sales will grow by twenty one percent over the course of this year compared to last year, and this has been driven mainly by the availability of the iPad according to the report from Infonetics. It is further thought that this market will reach a value of twenty billions dollars by 2014. The number of mobile broadband subscribers is predicted to reach 1.8 billion by 2014 according to the report.

The report also claimed that LTE would be mainly PC based for the first five years, and that a small number of LTE smart phones would hit the market next year. However, smart phones in themselves are enjoying great success, with the mobile phone market share for smart phones rising to forty six percent in the second quarter of this year.

Richard Webb, directing analyst for mobile devices at Infonetics, predicted: “The current mobile broadband device and phones market is increasingly driven by embedded devices and smartphones, with injections of growth coming from new touch screen form factors such as the tablet, notably the Apple iPad, and e-readers like the Amazon Kindle. The fierce competition between smartphone operating systems is also pushing the market, with Android and Windows 7 devices showing a strong response to the popularity of the iPhone. As LTE rolls out, these trends will continue, with device competition intensifying around embedded devices and high-end ultra-smartphones.”
