WiMAX 4G coverage expansion grant given to DigitalBridge Communications

A grant that will allow the main private operator of WiMAX 4G broadband networks in rural and underserved areas of the US, DigitalBridge Communication Corp. (DBC) to increase its current coverage of wireless broadband in Appomattox County by a factor of three has been awarded by the Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative (MBC).

The Assistant County Administrator for Appomattox County, John Spencer said “Appomattox County appreciates DigitalBridge’s efforts to bring affordable broadband to the residents and businesses that need it the most. We look forward to partnering with DBC and MBC to expand coverage to even more unserved and underserved parts of the County over the next year.”

The CEO of DigitalBridge, Kelly Dunne said “This is a great day for everyone in Appomattox, from educators to health care providers to the residents of the County. We applaud MBC’s matching grant and the extension of its advanced, open-access fiber network to the County over the past two years. We expect that similar public-private stimulus programs at the federal level will lead to rapid deployments as well, significantly expanded broadband coverage, and new jobs.”

In a similar way to the continuing federal stimulus program, that has seen the DBC participating in actively, the award was given to DigitalBridge through a highly competitive bidding process. A rollout of affordable wireless broadband services within six months with an adoption by businesses and residents of over 30 percent was created by the initial successful launch in Appomattox by DBC in 2008, which was also supported a matching grant by MBC. Prices begin as low as $29.99 a month for the areas that are now being served with the enhanced 4G broadband connection speeds, which should make access to high-speed broadband services more affordable to far more people.
