US broadband to be expanded with extra cash injection

It has been reported that broadband services in the United States are to be expanded following the cash injection of over one billion dollars from the government.

It has been reported that many under-served rural communities in the United States are set to enjoy better access to broadband after the United States government announced that it would be injecting over one billion dollars in the expansion of broadband services in the country.

In an announcement made last week the US government announced that it would spending $1.2 billion on the expansion of broadband to provide better access to those communities and areas that currently struggle to get access to adequate broadband services.

When making the announcement about the grants Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack stated: “The broadband projects announced today will give rural Americans access to the tools they need to attract new businesses, jobs, health care and educational opportunities.” He added: “The Obama administration understands that bringing broadband to rural America provides a gateway for businesses and key anchor institutions — such as libraries, schools, public safety and community centers — to provide services to thousands of Americans.”

Despite its size the United States is lagging behind many countries when it comes to high speed internet penetration, and under the new plans government officials have proposed speeds that are up to twenty five times faster than the current national average. Current average speeds in the United States stand at less than 4Mbps according to a recent speed test report from analytical firm Akamai.
