Social networking reduces popularity of blogs

According to recent reports many Americans are now moving away from blogging in favour of the ease and convenience of social networking using their broadband and internet services.

According to a recent report a rising number of Americans who use broadband regularly are moving away from blogging and turning instead to other methods and types of media such as social networking sites to get their opinions and view across. The popularity of blogging is said to have suffered hugely, as bloggers have found that sites such as Facebook and Twitter offer more opportunities and a far greater audience.

Over recent years a huge number of people have taken to blogging about a wide range of topics. However, the more recent popularity of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter has resulted in a rising number of people moving away from regular blogging and enjoying the instant nature of networking sites where their views will reach a far wider range and number of people.

San Francisco filmmaker Michael McDonald said that he had stopped using blogs, and preferred the impact that his post had when he used Facebook. He said: “I don’t use my blog anymore. All the people I’m trying to reach are on Facebook.” Blogs have become increasingly popular over the past decade, and in 2004 the word ‘blog’ actually won a word of the year title.
However, some people still believe that blogs are more effective. Elisa Camahort Page, co-founder of BlogHer, a women’s blog network said: “If you’re looking for substantive conversation, you turn to blogs. You aren’t going to find it on Facebook, and you aren’t going to find it in 140 characters on Twitter.”
