Phase I of broadband project completed by Earthlink

It has been reported recently that Phase I of the Eastern Tennessee Middle Mile Fiber Broadband Project has been completed by leading IP infrastructure and services company EarthLink Business.

According to recent reports Phase I of the Eastern Tennessee Middle Mile Fiber Broadband Project has been completed by leading IP infrastructure and services company EarthLink Business. Last year the company was awarded a $9.4 million in federal stimulus funding by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) through the Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP).

This funding was provided to enable the network expansion to be carried out, with the first Phase of the expansion including the overbuild of a fibre optic route stretching from Nashville to Knoxville. There was also a new route extended from Knoxville to Chattanooga. A new fibre optic route extending from Knoxville to Blountville is already underway.

The final Phase of this broadband expansion project is set to be completed in around the third quarter of this year. Five new interconnection points will be added as part of this expansion, and this includes Cookeville, Oak Ridge, Cleveland, Sweetwater and Morristown, Tennessee. These are areas that are currently classed as being inadequately served by Connected Tennessee.

Jim O’Brien, EarthLink Business Executive Vice President of Network Services and Customer Operations, said: “We are excited to continue to expand our network footprint and fiber assets and provide increased connectivity options for both new and existing business customers. Partnering with these organizations to help implement more efficient communications will allow them to better serve their constituencies in Tennessee and beyond.”
