Broadband speeds in certain US cities set to double

In an effort to keep pace with the broadband speeds offered by cable providers in the US the internet download speeds for Qwest communications International Inc. is set to double in some parts of the country.

Certain areas of 15 cities including Salt Lake City; Minneapolis/St Paul.; Tucson and Phoenix, Arizona; Denver and Vancouver and Seattle, Washington will soon be seeing broadband plan offering speeds of up to 40Mbps for downloads and 20Mbps for uploading according to a recent statement from the service provider.

Over the coming month Qwest has said that it will be rolling out the new service to a number of other cities and will also be offering any customers living in the upgraded cities with faster upload speeds, which will prove useful for video conferencing, online backups or just sharing large data files, with a 5Mbps upload connection costing $5.

This new plan will be combined with its home phone package and will cost $110 a month for the first year.

Some parts of the US have already seen cable broadband speeds increasing to 50Mbps and in some cases even more this year as cable companies begin rolling out new cable modem technology.

The few parts of the country that recently benefitted from Qwest’s network upgrade that saw the shortening of the distance that data had to travel over the old copper wire phone line by the running of fiber optic cabling closer to homes will soon be able to take advantage of the new high speed DSL technology known as VDSL as the provider attempt to bring its broadband speeds in line with its cable rivals.

Speeds of up to 20Mbps download and under 1Mbps for upload has been offered so far for areas where the fiber optic cabling has been rolled out, although areas without will still be limited to 7Mbps for their download connections.
