$1.7 million grant for South Carolina

Last week saw South Carolina receive a match grant of $1.7 million from the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration to look into broadband availability.

It has been reported that earlier this week the state of South Carolina received a match grant of $1.7 million from the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration, with the money to be used towards researching the availability of broadband services. The money is to be used to generate a comprehensive map of the availability of broadband services within the United States.

The Connect South Carolina Program will be involved in doing the research and producing the map of broadband availability as part of the project according to reports. The Connect South Caroline program is a partnership that has been formed between the state and Connected Nation with the aim of increasing access to broadband internet in more rural areas of the state.

The governor of the state, Mark Sanford, said: “For our state to be remain competitive and thrive in an increasingly global marketplace, it is vital that people living in rural South Carolina have as much of a chance to get on the information highway as people living in our urban cores.”

He added: “As we’ve long advocated, without high speed access, the economic growth opportunities of these regions may well be locked in at low speeds and for the way that this grant can help the public sector leverage the private sector’s investment in rural broadband, I’d encourage Connect South Carolina in the task before them.” An official from Connection Nations added: “We are pleased to be working with the state to help create a comprehensive broadband map of South Carolina.”
