Users to be alerted to bots and viruses by Comcast

With the adoption of these new security alert measures, Comcast has claimed that it is among the first broadband network operators to offer this kind of service to its customers.

A new pilot program of a notification system that will warn any broadband customers whose systems appear to be infected with a virus or a “bot” has now been launched by broadband network operator, Comcast.

A trial of the Constant Guard security application was launched in Denver recently by the MSO and this new service will display a notification in the users browser if their computers are suspected of being compromised asking them to visit the Comcast security centre online for the bot to be removed from their computers and to prevent other users from being infected by the virus.

The MSO believes that it is one of the first broadband service providers to offer proactive measure like this in the US according to the spokesman for Comcast, Charlie Douglas.

A dedicated “customer security assurance team” that will contact customers proactively in response to security related issues such as malware, viruses, bot attacks and other security related issue has been created by Comcast as part of the Constant Guard application.

As well as offering its users a web toolbar that comes with spyware detection and removal, anti phishing software and a pop-up blocker, Comcast also offer its customers the McAfee Internet Security Suite, which is valued at around $120 for free to its broadband customers.

The senior vice president and the general manager of Comcast’s online services, Mitch Bowling said “As the nation’s largest residential Internet service provider, our goal is to provide a safe and secure Internet experience for our customers. The Constant Guard Security Program is the result of many years of working to assemble the right people, technologies and resources to help ensure our customers are protected from hackers and bots in real-time.”
