According to recent reports communications giant Verizon is terminating internet access for some broadband users that are violating filesharing regulations.

Illegal file sharing amongst broadband users is a topic that has found itself at the centre of a fierce battle in the United States as well as in many other countries, and authorities have been looking at ways to tackle online piracy and illegal file sharing following an outcry from the entertainment industry, which claims to be losing huge sums of money as a result of illegal file sharing amongst consumers.

It has been reported recently that the US communications giant Verizon is cutting off the Internet access of a number of consumers that have been repeatedly flouting copyright regulations by continuing to illegally file share despite warnings. No figure has been released with regards to how many of the provider’s customers will lose their Internet access, but the decision comes just a year after Verizon said that it would not be adopting this strategy to deal with illegal file sharers.

Recently the Recording Industry Association of America and the Motion Picture Association of America have been lobbying Internet Service Providers and congress in order to try and drum up support for action to be taken against those found to be illegally file sharing. Following the revelation from Verizon with regards to terminating internet access for those found guilty of illegal file sharing many officials are now wondering whether other Internet Service Providers will follow suit.

The provider has more than eight million broadband customers, and although no figure has been given with regards to how many of these have had their internet access terminated one report claimed that the number was relatively small.
