It has been claimed that many mobile broadband and smart phone users in the United States will experience confusion this year over the definition of 4G.
Many tech savvy consumers across the United States have been waiting a long time to get their hands on 4G technology, which is set to provide them with faster, more efficient, and more reliable mobile broadband. The good news is that the technology is set to come a long way this year, finally giving people the technology that they have been waiting for, but it will come with a big dollop of confusion for many.
Industry officials claims that the reason why things will get confusing for users of mobile broadband and smart phones is because there will be more genuine emerging 4G technology available to them this year, but at the same time many providers are already using the term 4G for their own services. For consumer that do not know the ins and outs of 4G and HSPA+ service this could make things difficult when trying to determine which plan to opt for.
A study into consumer confusion over 4G technology was recently carried out by telecommunications research firm Neilson, and an official from the company said: “The industry uses a lot of technology-based definitions that don’t mean much to consumers. People want to know how is this going to benefit them.”
AT&T and T-Mobile are amongst the provider who are using HSPA+ technology but are marketing it as 4G. The results of the study showed that whilst eighty percent of those polled were aware of the term 4G only forty percent actually understood what it meant.
