Apple is the largest seller of smartphones

A report was released that shows Apple is the largest smartphone seller.  Apple managed to sell 203 million phones in Q2 of this year.

Samsung ranked in second place with 17.3 million smartphones sold.  I can see why Apple is probably afraid of Samsung who seems to be catching up quickly.

In the past year, Apple phone sales have increased 141% from second quarter of last year while Samsung’s sales increased 380% over last year’s Q2.  If these sales keep the same pace, Samsung will soon overtake Apple as the number smartphone seller.

Nokia seems to be nipping at Samsung’s heels in third place with sales of 16.7 million in Q2.  I can see Nokia slipping once they stop making their own phones and start building Microsoft’s Phone 7 starting with the Mango build.

RIM’s sales of 12.4 million BlackBerrys shows their strong following and all the Federal government and business enterprise purchasers.  That puts the in fourth place.

HTC comes in fifth with 11.7 million units sold in Q2.

IDC, the originator of the report gave a reason for Samsung’s outstanding performance.  “Samsung realized the largest year-over-year growth of any vendor among the top five, and key to its continued success was the global popularity of its flagship Galaxy S smartphones. What originally began as a series of high-end smartphones has proliferated well into the mass-market, but has not strayed too far from its high-end roots.”

The Android OS still leads Apple’s iOS.
