Upstate New York received $158 million in wireless broadband investments by Verizon in 2011
Verizon announced today that they have invested around $158 million in wireless networking across Upstate New York. This is the 11th successive year where Verizon has spent more than $100 million on the wireless network here.
They have invested over $1.4 billion in Upstate New York ever since 2000.
The Verizon 4G LTE network was rolled out in the Rochester area in 2011. So far, over 60% of Upstate New York has access to their 4G LTE wireless network.
The President of Verizon’s Upstate New York Region, Russ Preite said “We know more people across Upstate New York depend on their Verizon Wireless smartphones, tablets, laptop modems and other wireless devices to stay connected, to be more productive, and for entertainment. That’s why we’re always investing and working to ensure our network and wireless solutions are the very best.”
In addition to improving their wireless network in Upstate New York, they have also responded to major emergencies. When Hurricane Irene struck, there was extreme flooding.
Verizon let their herd of COLTS out of the barn and deployed them across the flooded areas of Margaretville and Prattsville. The COLTS are Cells On Light Trucks. They are completely stand-alone wireless cell sites that have their own generator and satellite links to provide wireless voice and broadband service when flooding destroyed the local infrastructure.
