Go Daddy loses around $370,000 in revenue due to SOPA stance
Go Daddy lost about $370,000 in revenue each year for the coming years just because they came out in support of SOPA. If you want to know what SOPA is, Broadband Expert wrote about it.
Shortly after Go Daddy’s name turned up on a list of companies that supported SOPA, a boycott started to grow on the internet. Go Daddy discounted the boycott and clearly did not think it could affect them.
It turns out Go Daddy didn’t calculate correctly as a substantial number of clients pulled their domains from Go Daddy. At the end of two days, 37,000 domains had changed to other ISPs.
Go Daddy did an about-face and issued a statement saying they no longer supported SOPA, but it does not seem to be working. Part of the tweet says “Go Daddy will support it when and if the Internet community supports it.” The Go Daddy tweet is no longer available, but a copy of the full tweet is found here.
Anonymous, the hacker group, has reported on Christmas Eve that 72,354 domains have left. This could increase the lost revenue to $750,000.
The success of the boycott can be attributed to a great amout of posting on the social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and Reddit. Additionally a lot of popular bloggers helped spread the word.
