In business since 1994, Sonic.net offered DSL service and then made a local name for itself by offering a bonded DSL service that provided a 40 Mbps broadband service over two copper phone lines for $69.99.  Sonic.net was California’s best kept secret.

To get this 1 Gbps service, Sonic is running a fiber line directly to the customer’s house.  This is a pilot project and will supply the 1 Gbps service to 700 residences.

Sonic.net’s CEO, Dane Jasper, believes fast service at a low price is possible.  In an interview with ars technica Dane said “Honestly, only as those wrap up will we have a complete picture of the economic model.  But I believe that fast service for a low cost is possible.”

Sonic.net just won the contract to manage 1 Gbps service to Stanford University’s faculty houses.  Over 800 faculty members will get this service.
