Voice over LTE test is successful at SuperOp 2011
Just as mobile spectrum segments get harder to obtain, a new technology becomes available to make more efficient use of the existing spectrum. In the future, the analog voice spectrum may be possibly converted to digital.
At the yearly SuperOp sponsored by the International Multimedia Telecommunications Consortium (IMTC), the world’s first test of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) was judged to be a success. The annual SuperOp is attended by the world’s best telecommunications engineers from all the leading telecom companies.
This VoLTE achievement took a lot of work and cooperation between many companies. ST-Ericsson, Ericsson, RADVISION, Intel Mobile, Samsung and Huawei all combined efforts to achieve this milestone in wireless development. Using a 4G LTE network provided by Huawei, various wireless devices completed high-quality calls on a common user network interface.
VoLTE is far from seeing the consumer market this year, but this live and functional proof of concept shows that it is possible.
The International Multimedia Teleccommunications Consortium has already scheduled further testing. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) will also be testing VoLTE.
The MultiService Forum (MSF) is also joining in testing VoLTE. With all of the high-powered and influential world organizations supporting this technology, we should see rapid development of VoLTE and eventual deployment globally.
