South Dakota broadband maps now available on web site
South Dakota now has an interactive broadband map for the state thanks to federal stimulus funds.
South Dakota does have DSL available in many areas as you can see in the map. But if you check out the cable broadband, the state is ill-equipped for really high speed broadband; I think it looks quite dismal.
Availability of fiber to the home is a little better as is shown on the map. You can look at the other static maps to get an idea of wireless broadband coverage and available speeds.
The South Dakota broadband web site compares broadband need like the need for electricity one hundred years ago:
Like electricity a century ago, broadband is a
foundation for economic growth, job creation,
global competitiveness and a better way of life.
South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard issued a statement that said in part: “High-speed broadband is very important to the future of South Dakota. Individuals and businesses alike have a vested interest in expanding the South Dakota economy, and I believe that high-speed technology will be an important part of that success.”
A lot of areas in South Dakota are rural and in rough terrain that has made it difficult for broadband providers to install the needed infrastructure. Hopefully, with the availability of federal stimulus funds, there will be a growth in the state’s broadband infrastructure.
