Massachusetts Broadband Institute will lease redundant fiber interconnect
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has said his administration is pushing to outfit the entire state of Massachusetts with broadband access. The MassBroadband 123 network project run by the Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI) is in the process of expanding high speed broadband access to the western part of the state.
In order to heat up the infrastructure MBI is putting in place, they need a connection to one of the major Internet hubs in the United States. Lightower Fiber Networks will be the provider for that connection.
The MBI agreed to lease two existing fiber paths controlled by Lightower Fiber Networks. These two fiber leases will provide a redundant connection to the main New England Internet gateway in Boston.
The redundancy was an important part of the bidding process to provide this connection. Lightower Fiber Networks also met that requirement. Redundancy is extremely important so the network will continue to perform despite a fiber break due to storms, construction or any other man-made or natural threat.
Governor Deval Patrick commented “Our Administration is committed to bringing affordable and reliable broadband access to residents and businesses across the Commonwealth. By expanding broadband infrastructure and forming new public-private partnerships, we will enhance our economic vitality and drive job growth for Massachusetts residents.”
