Ericsson demonstrates LTE Advanced with ten times the speed of 4G LTE

So you think LTE is fast?  How would you like to get ten times that speed?  This is not a daydream and Ericsson just demonstrated LTE Advanced with a base cell site and a mobile van.

LTE Advanved logo Ericsson demonstrates LTE Advanced with ten times the speed of 4G LTEThe Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS) set aside a test frequency spread of 60 MHz (three 20 MHz sections) in Kista, Sweden.  Amazingly, all the equipment is based on readily available commercial equipment that is 3GPP Release 10 global standard compliant.

Such high speeds are achieved by carrier aggregation where spectrum segments are combined to achieve the desired speeds.  Extended multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) functionality is also part of LTE Advanced.

The ITU (International Telecommunication Union) has determined that LTE Advanced “fulfills International Mobile Telecommunication’s criteria.”  LTE Advanced is expected to be available commercially in Sweden by 2013.

The Head of Spectrum Department of Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS), Mr. Urban Landmark said “Sweden is in the forefront when it comes to usage of mobile broadband. Sweden was both early with licensing of harmonized spectrum in the 2.6GHz and 800MHz bands, and the first country in the world where LTE was commercially deployed. The demonstration today indicates that mobile broadband technologies continue to evolve rapidly.”

When this technology is going to be tried in the United States is unknown at this time, but Qualcomm and Agilent are just two of the companied in the US that are working on LTE Advanced.
